Installation in a Door or WallUpdated 8 days ago

Flappie can be installed in wooden doors, PVC doors, and walls. Here's what you need to know about cut-out sizes, materials, and thickness.

Required cut-out size

Cut-out (W × H)Notes
166 × 170 mm (recommended)Recommended cut-out for new installations
Existing hole up to 175 × 210 mmFits without adapter
> 175 mm (W) or > 210 mm (H)Too large — opening must be reduced (mounting adapter is for glass only)

For new installations, we recommend a cut-out of 166 mm (W) × 170 mm (H). An existing hole from a previous cat flap works up to a maximum of 175 × 210 mm. Unlike glass installations, there is no mounting adapter for rectangular openings — larger holes need to be reduced with wood filler or an insert panel.

Floor clearance

There should be at least 27 mm between the bottom of the cut-out and the floor. This ensures the frame sits flush and your cat can step through comfortably.

Edge clearance

The cut-out should be at least 30 mm from the door or wall edge.

Compatible materials

Flappie works with most common door and wall materials:

  • Wooden doors — the most straightforward installation. A jigsaw is enough.
  • PVC doors — works well, but check whether your door has reinforcement profiles inside that could interfere with the cut-out.
  • Walls (brick, drywall, etc.) — fully supported, but you'll likely need tunnel extensions → depending on wall thickness.

Door/wall thickness

The standard Flappie frame fits doors up to 36 mm thick. For anything thicker, add tunnel extensions — each one adds 27 mm. Walls up to 200 mm are supported. See Tunnel Extensions: When and How Many? → for the full table.

Tips for a clean cut

Mark the cut-out carefully using the included template. For wooden doors, a jigsaw gives the cleanest result. For walls, consider having a professional handle the cut — especially for load-bearing walls or insulated walls with cavities.
